If you’ve already read The Treasures We Find—and the Ones That Find Us, you know that searching for nature’s treasures changed my life. But one discovery deserves a story of its own: the Saffordite stone that found me in the Arizona desert.

Of all the shells, crystals, stones, and unexpected gifts I’ve found during my travels, none has become more intertwined with my journey than Saffordite.

The Saffordite Stone That Called to Me

I first learned about Saffordite through a spiritual blog, before my nomadic journey had even begun.

Also known by some as Cintamani stones or Arizona tektites, these mysterious black stones are found in the desert surrounding Safford, Arizona. Their exact origins remain a source of debate, and their spiritual significance is interpreted in many different ways.

But from the moment I read about them, something stirred within me.

I couldn’t explain why, but I felt certain that Saffordite would one day become part of my life. I just didn’t know how—or when.

In 2020, my partner and I began living and traveling full-time on the road. We embraced a simpler life, following the backroads of America through small towns, open landscapes, and places we might never have discovered otherwise.

More than a year into our travels, I mentioned Saffordite to him.

To my surprise, his response mirrored my own excitement. He felt the pull too.

By November 2021, the timing finally seemed right. We pointed our home on wheels toward southeastern Arizona and began our search for the stones that had been quietly calling to me for years.

Searching for Saffordite Stones in the Arizona Desert

We found a dispersed campsite on public land not far from our search area. There were no hookups, running water, or campground amenities—only our trailer, the wide desert, and miles of rugged terrain waiting beyond our door.

Each morning, we set out on foot.

At first, the landscape seemed almost overwhelming. Millions of rocks covered the ground, and many looked remarkably similar to the dark stones we were searching for. We walked for hours beneath the Arizona sun, carefully scanning the desert floor.

Sometimes we found nothing.

Then, little by little, our eyes began to adjust.

The first Saffordites slowly revealed themselves. Their velvety black surfaces emerged from the weathered volcanic terrain, often hiding in plain sight among countless ordinary stones.

I still remember the first time I held a Saffordite stone in my hand.

I felt joy and peace.

It felt like home.

We hadn’t discovered many stones during that first trip, but we had found enough to know we would return.

And we did.

Again and again.

Searching Beneath the Desert Sky

Some of our most memorable searches began as the daylight was fading.

We would leave camp around sunset, walking beneath spectacular skies with Mount Graham rising in the distance. The colors stretched across the horizon in layers of gold, pink, orange, and violet, transforming the desert before darkness settled in.

I was never completely comfortable being out in those wild desert spaces after dark. The landscape felt bigger at night, and every distant sound seemed sharper and more mysterious.

Yet there was also something magical about searching for Saffordite stones by flashlight.

Without the shifting shadows of daylight, their black surfaces often seemed to stand out more clearly against the surrounding ground. As the beam of the flashlight passed across the desert floor, a Saffordite could suddenly appear as though it had been waiting for the light to find it.

The sights and sounds of the nighttime desert heightened our sense of discovery. The fading warmth, the dark silhouettes of the mountains, and the quiet movement of unseen desert life kept us alert and fully present.

Even with my uneasiness, those nighttime searches became some of the most unforgettable.

When the Search Became Something More

Our first trip to the Safford area was brief, but its impact stayed with us.

We returned in the spring of 2022 and continued searching across the seemingly endless desert. Each day left us exhilarated, dusty, and completely worn out. At times, it felt like we had stepped into an Indiana Jones movie—except the challenges were very real.

The desert could be beautiful, meditative, and unforgiving all at once.

We walked for miles in intense sun. Fierce winds swept dust through our campsite. On one trip, a dust devil passed directly over us, leaving everything covered in a fine layer of desert grit.

There were rattlesnakes to consider too. During one search, my partner came dangerously close to a rattlesnake before hearing its warning. As temperatures began to rise and snakes became more active, we knew it was time to move on.

Yet none of those challenges diminished our desire to return.

The search had become far more than a hobby.

The Saffordite Beside the Bush

One experience remains especially vivid.

We had been walking for miles without finding a single Saffordite. The heat and disappointment were beginning to wear on me when I felt an instinctive nudge to walk toward a nearby desert bush.

There, resting on the ground as though it had been placed for that exact moment, was a beautifully rounded Saffordite weighing more than twenty grams.

Its jet-black surface was covered with delicate, moonlike craters. When I held it against the light from my phone, the stone glowed from within, revealing a translucent beauty that had been completely invisible only moments before.

That Saffordite stone became my personal favorite.

I carried it, held it, and connected with it for several years. It accompanied me through meditation, travel, uncertainty, and change.

Eventually, however, I began to feel that it had a greater purpose beyond remaining with me.

Letting it go was not an impulsive decision. I waited until I felt ready and trusted the quiet intuition telling me that the stone belonged somewhere else.

Its journey eventually carried it all the way to Switzerland, where it went to someone involved in a holistic medical practice.

I still think about that stone from time to time.

I wonder where it has traveled, whose hands have held it, and how its presence may be affecting people’s lives far beyond the Arizona desert where I first found it.

Perhaps that is part of the mystery of these stones—their stories continue long after they leave our hands.

Learning to See Differently

Over time, we began to recognize something difficult to explain.

On days when our minds were distracted or restless, we could walk for hours without seeing a single stone. We hurried, searched harder, and became frustrated by the empty miles.

But when we relaxed, became quiet, and simply enjoyed being in the desert, something shifted.

The Saffordites often seemed to reveal themselves in places we might otherwise have walked right past.

Perhaps it wasn’t the stones changing.

Perhaps it was us.

Searching required more than looking down at the ground. It required patience, presence, and an openness to what could not always be predicted or explained.

I began carrying one of the stones with me and holding it during meditation. To me, its presence felt grounding and peaceful. Whether that feeling came from the stone itself, the meaning I had attached to it, or the countless quiet hours spent searching in nature no longer seemed especially important.

The experience was changing me.

That was what mattered.

Returning Again

We returned to the Safford area in March 2024.

The spring weather was as unpredictable as ever, but our searches were successful. During that trip, we found our largest Saffordite yet—a remarkable stone weighing more than forty grams.

By then, however, success was no longer measured only by the number or size of the stones we carried back to camp.

The long walks had become meditative.

The desert had taught us how to observe more closely, how to trust our instincts, and how to remain present even when the thing we hoped to find did not immediately appear.

Every Saffordite was still exciting.

But the search itself had become part of the treasure.

From StarStone Cintamani to Saffordites Unearthed

Our Etsy shop opened in 2022 under the name StarStone Cintamani.

At the time, that name reflected the spiritual language through which we had first encountered the stones. As our knowledge and personal relationship with them deepened, however, we found ourselves increasingly drawn to the name Saffordite.

Last year, we renamed the shop Saffordites Unearthed.

The new name felt more authentic to our story. These were not stones we had purchased from a wholesaler or acquired through an unknown supply chain. We had personally searched for and hand-mined them from the Arizona desert.

We knew the miles behind them.

We knew the weather, the dust, the excitement, and the perseverance required to find them.

The name Saffordites Unearthed honored that experience.

Building a Trusted Saffordite Resource

As our shop grew, customers began asking thoughtful questions about the stones—their origins, identifying characteristics, history, spiritual traditions, and the differences between the various names used to describe them.

We soon discovered how little clear and reliable information was available online.

Much of what we found was either repeated without supporting evidence, presented as unquestionable fact, or scattered across disconnected sources. We felt there was a genuine need for a place where people could explore Saffordites with both curiosity and discernment.

That realization led us to begin building the Saffordites Unearthed website.

The website was created not only to complement our Etsy shop, but also to become a trusted and authoritative resource on Saffordite stones.

We spend countless hours researching geological information, regional history, cultural traditions, spiritual beliefs, and the many competing theories surrounding these unusual stones. Our goal is not to tell readers what they must believe.

It is to separate documented information from speculation, present different perspectives honestly, and help people understand what makes Saffordites so fascinating.

We want to bring the most authentic truth available about these wonder stones into the world while still honoring the mystery that surrounds them.

Sharing What We Found

It has never felt as though we started a business simply to sell stones.

It has always felt more like sharing something that became deeply meaningful in our own lives.

Every Saffordite stone we offer has been found by us during our travels through the Arizona desert. We understand the effort behind each one—the miles walked, the changing weather, the careful searching, and the moment of recognition when a stone finally appears among the surrounding rocks.

One of our greatest joys has been connecting these remarkable gifts from the Earth with people who feel genuinely drawn to them.

Each person may see something different in a Saffordite.

Some are fascinated by its unusual appearance or debated origins. Others connect with its spiritual symbolism. Some simply appreciate the wonder of holding a stone discovered in a remote desert landscape.

There is room for all of those experiences.

Returning to Our Happy Place

We are now planning another Saffordite-hunting trip in the near future.

The thought of returning fills me with anticipation.

I look forward to the wide-open desert, the changing light across Mount Graham, the miles of quiet searching, and the unmistakable excitement of seeing a black stone emerge from the earth.

Even the difficult parts have become part of what makes the place meaningful—the dust, the wind, the tired legs, and the long stretches when nothing is found.

The Safford desert has become one of our happy places.

It is where curiosity became purpose, where searching became meditation, and where a mysterious black stone became woven into the story of our lives.

The Treasure I Brought Home

Today, I still wander in search of treasures.

I still smile when a shell catches my eye, when sunlight reveals the edge of a crystal, or when a black Saffordite appears unexpectedly among the desert stones.

But I no longer believe the greatest treasure is the one I bring home.

The real treasure is the attention awakened during the search.

It is the willingness to slow down.

The patience to keep walking when nothing appears.

The intuition that gently says, Look over there.

And the quiet realization that sometimes the things we believe we are searching for have been leading us toward something deeper all along.

I once thought I had traveled to the Arizona desert to find Saffordite.

Looking back, I believe Saffordite found me first.
